The Whale: A One Man Moby Dick

The U.S. Consulate General, Chennai and the Hindu MetroPlus Theater Festival are proud to present the play “The Whale: A One Man Moby Dick” by the Concrete Temple Theatre, New York, USA (http://www.concretetempletheatre.com/), on August 7, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sir Mutha Venkata Subba Rao Concert Hall (Lady Andal School premises), Harrington Road, Chetpet, Chennai 600031.

The play is based on Herman Melville’s classic Moby Dick which was published in 1851 and is considered one of world literature’s greatest poetic epics.  It tells the tale of Captain Ahab and his maniacal pursuit of the ever-elusive white whale, Moby Dick.  Concrete Temple Theatre’s adaptation of Moby Dick, The Whale, uses only body, voice, and an extraordinary collection of hand-crafted and rigged props to create life on a whale ship.  Carlo Adinolfi of Concrete Temple Theatre, who is a dancer and actor by training, puts into service a variety of storytelling traditions. The effect of one man embodying this enormous literary epic in 60 minutes is simultaneously playful and profound.

Tickets for The Whale are available at www.thehindu.com or from any of the three outlets of Landmark or the performance venue.

Concrete Temple Theatre will also lead "A Voice, Movement and Performance Workshop: Page to Stage" for theatre professionals in Chennai on August 8, 2008 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Women's Christian College (WCC)  Assembly Hall, College Road, Chennai 600006.  The workshop will introduce participants to the skill of adapting by using snippets of Concrete Temple's adaptation of Melville's Moby Dick for illustration. Participants will be asked at the beginning of the workshop to select text that they themselves would like to put into a different form, be it theatre, film, TV, or visual arts and will conclude by the members sharing their own ideas for an adaptation.
