Loyola College Wins Top Prizes in Democracy Speech Contest

Pride in Indian democracy and the hope that the country will play a proactive role in promoting democracy in South Asia resounded in an intercollegiate speech contest on “Worldwide Movement for Democracy: India’s Role” organized by the U.S. Consulate in association with Madras Christian College on Wednesday, August 12. The competition encouraged the participants to contemplate and analyze the status of democracy in their region, including India, and offered them a platform to express their views and solutions.  While all participants expressed deep concerns about the state of democracy in India’s neighborhood, many felt that India, being the largest and only longest functioning democracy in the region, should play a more active role in bringing democracy, peace and stability to its neighbors.  Some of them pointed out that though India is the largest democracy in the world, it is a very young country, and has to work on bettering its own political institutions before playing a major role in democratization of its neighbors.  Fifteen students participated in the competition representing various city colleges.

Mr. Pradeep Rajdas and Jude Sannith from Loyola College won the 1st and 2nd prizes respectively, and Mr. P. Vishnu Charan of RMK Engineering College won the 3rd prize. Ms. Neeta Srikanth from M.O.P. Vaishnav College was awarded a prize for being the best questioner.  U.S. Consul General Mr. Andrew T. Simkin distributed prizes to the winners and formally inaugurated MCC’s College Union Society.
