Welcome to the American Library Chennai

The U.S. Consulate General in Chennai welcomes you to the new American Library!  Since its establishment in 1947, the Library has played a special role in the relationship between the people of the United States and South India.  So many people across the region have shared their memories of the American Library with us – how it inspired, informed, and challenged them.  The new library promises to continue that tradition for a new generation of South Indians and welcome back our old friends.  Just as the U.S.-India partnership has risen to new levels, the American Library is also evolving.  With a new event space, video viewing coves, online kiosks and much more, the Library has moved into the 21st century.

  • Grab a seat in our new event space to experience American culture, interact with U.S. diplomats, learn more about the United States and the U.S.-India partnership, or speak to education advisors and alumni!
  • Get lost in our wealth of online and electronic resources, including our popular eLibrary, which houses more than 30 specialized databases!
  • Choose from an extensive selection of American movies and documentaries, and then sit down and watch them alone or with a friend in our comfortable viewing coves!
  • Bring the kids and enjoy our expanded children’s area, full of books, videos, and educational activities for even our youngest visitors!

The Library includes more than 15,000 books.  In addition to our collections in the social sciences, business, management, and American Literature, the Library provides information on the United States, its democratic institutions, history, and politics. Our dedicated staff provide a wide range of resources and services, offering accurate and up-to-date information on American governmental and non-governmental institutions, policies, the economy, global issues, institutions, society, culture, literature, history and contemporary life.

Library admission is free and open to the general public. Fees for other services apply.
