Statement By Sean Mccormack, Spokesman

State Department Officials Meet with Indian Foreign Secretary Menon

We were pleased to welcome Indian Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon to Washington April 30 – May 1 for discussions on our growing partnership with India.

Foreign Secretary Menon had an excellent meeting with Secretary Rice May 1.  Under Secretary Burns also held two days of discussions with Foreign Secretary Menon on the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Initiative.

The discussions were positive and the U.S. is encouraged by the extensive progress that was made on the issues.  We look forward to resolving the outstanding issues in the weeks ahead.  In that regard, Under Secretary Burns will visit India in the second half of May to reach a final agreement.

Under Secretary Burns and Foreign Secretary Menon also agreed to continue our work together to bring stability and peace to the region.
