Statement by David C. Mulford
U.S. Ambassador to India
New Delhi: Ambassador David C. Mulford, U.S. Ambassador to India, issued the following statement today:
"The American people were shocked by the brutal murders on the Virginia Tech campus on Monday and we have been deeply moved by the expressions of sympathy and support from around the world to this terrible tragedy.
As we have repeatedly seen in recent years, tragic events have a capacity to link people around the world. This tragedy is no different, as these murders deeply touch us all with a sense of loss to the world -- in lives and human potential.
We mourn today the loss of so many innocent Americans and others, including Indian - American Professor G V Loganathan and Ms. Minal Panchal of Mumbai. We offer our deep condolences to their families and the U.S. Mission here in India stands ready to assist them. Indian students and scholars are valued members of our higher education communities.
President Bush spoke for us all yesterday when he said, "Schools should be places of safety and sanctuary and learning." Mrs. Mulford and I join millions around in the world in expressing our sorrow at these tragic events."
