Consular Services

Registration

The Consulate urges all American citizens, even those visiting India for a short time, to register with the Consular Section. In the event of an emergency, the Consulate will provide information and other critical assistance to American citizens. Registration is the only way to guarantee that the Consulate is aware of your presence in the country and is able to contact you and assist you in such circumstances.

Please click here to register online.

American citizens may also register in person at the Consulate between 9:00 am - 12:00 pm and 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm on any workday, or complete and print the online form and submit it by fax to 91-44-2811-2086 or e-mail to chennaics@state.gov.

The Consulate's primary means of communication with American citizens in India during an emergency is our warden system. The warden system consists of American citizens who volunteer to disseminate information passed on from the Consulate to other American citizens in the country. The warden system is used to communicate only emergency information. We also distribute this information directly via e-mail or fax to any American citizen who asks to be included in our warden notification network. If you have included an e-mail or fax number when you registered we will include you in our list automatically, or you may e-mail us at chennaics@state.gov and ask to be included.

Please visit the State Department's Web Page on Emergency Preparedness and Ready.gov of the Department of Homeland Security. A little planning and preparation can be very helpful in an emergency situation.
