The American Library

Reference Service

The American Library staff will provide reference service to all members using a wide range of resources. Print resources include circulating books, encyclopedias, directories, almanacs, periodicals, and periodical indexes and others. Electronic resources consist of bibliographic, textual and multimedia CD-ROM databases, online databases and Internet. The reference collection is most effectively used in person, however, American Library staff will answer queries submitted by telephone, fax or email. Staff will also provide bibliographies on specific subjects on request.

Online searches

Reference librarians will also attempt to respond to a patron's request for information by searching the on-line databases.

Mail Loan

Mail service is offered on a limited basis to individuals and institutions outside of Chennai. The rules for borrowing are the same as in the case of a member residing in Chennai. Books will be sent by Registered Post. It is the member's responsibility to return the material by Registered Post. Bibliographies on specific topics will be provided on request. Reference service is also offered to Mail Service members. Members may request material by mail, fax, or email.

Photocopying

Photocopies are available from print reference sources and electronic databases for research purposes. The fee for copies from print resources per exposure is Re. 1.00, and from electronic databases, Rs. 3.00. Researched material may be downloaded on to a floppy at a cost of Rs. 25.00 per floppy.

Internet Access

The American Library provides members access to internet for research purposes.
