“America Days” Promotes Cultural Understanding

RAJKOT -- The Public Affairs section of the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai, in cooperation with the Saurashtra University, Sargam Club, Rajkot Chamber of Commerce, and the Municipal Corporation, has organized “America Days”-- a host of cultural and educational programs in Rajkot from July 16 to 19, 2007 at the Hemu Gadhvi auditorium.  The four-day event will be inaugurated at a gala function on July 16 at the Hemu Gadhvi (H.G.) Auditorium.  “America Days” will spotlight a number of the U.S. Consulate General’s programs and resources and provide an opportunity for dialogue and mutual cultural exchange, as well as offer young people resources and information on how to pursue their academic interests.

            A representative from the United States Education Foundation in India (USEFI) and a Consular (visa) officer will deliver lectures on U.S. higher education and visas.   There will also be several lectures held in various venues on topics such as disaster preparedness, NGO management, American history, business and management, creative writing, communication skills, the environment, good governance, and women’s empowerment.   A part of the “America Days” will also be organized in Jamnagar on Wednesday, July 18 in collaboration with Oswal Education Trust, and will include talks on U.S. higher education, visas, and business management.

            At the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (SPM) Art Gallery, there will be two exhibits: “Picturing the Century”  and the American Library’s collection of resources, including over a thousand books, periodicals, videos, DVDs, thematic posters, and in-house publications covering topics such as social sciences and humanities, business and economics, environment, law and legislation, and life and culture in the United States.  The Photo Exhibit “Picturing the Century: 100 Years of American Photographs” commemorates the end of the 20th century with a selection of historic photographs from the vast and varied holdings of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

            The programs will be inaugurated at the H.G. Auditorium on July 16 at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a performance by American jazz musician Carl Clements.

Entry to all “America Days” programs, including the Inauguration, is free and open to the general public.  The art gallery site will be open to all from 10:00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. on July 17 and 18, and until 12 noon on July 19.   Detailed program information will be available at the Inauguration and can be collected from the H.G. Auditorium and the SPM Gallery.
