U.S. Consul General Michael S. Owen Visits School for Remedial Education

Mumbai: U.S. Consul General Michael S. Owen and his wife Annerieke Owen paid a goodwill visit on June 21 to the School for Remedial Education in Mumbai.  He presented educational material to the school and interacted with the students and faculty. The school’s students presented a cultural entertainment program in honor of the Consul General's visit.

The Consul General expressed his admiration for the children and their determination to overcome their disabilities.  He emphasized how people with different disabilities have accomplished great things in life, giving the example of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who overcame physical disabilities to become the 32nd President of the United States.  "Who knows, this school might hold a future President of India," the Consul General said.

The School for Remedial Education (SRE), founded in 1986 by the Society for the Rehabilitation of Crippled Children, provides special education to students with specific learning disabilities which helps them to cope with the regular school curriculum. The school has more than 60 students and it also assists over 150 other challenged students who come for counseling.  Principal Vijaya Adimoolam expressed her appreciation of the Consul General's visit: “We have a small beginning. But we are sure to grow. And why not when we have the support and good wishes of people like the U.S. Consul General who has given his time and attention to our concerns?”
