American Center Sponsors Conference Of South And Central Asian Youth Leaders

April 16, 2007

NEW DELHI – The American Center is sponsoring a three-day regional conference of youth leaders from across South and Central Asia beginning in New Delhi today. The conference is being held in cooperation with the Vidya Sanskar School in Faridabad as part of the U.S. commitment to developing and empowering young people and building mutual understanding across South and Central Asia.

Young people from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Khazakhstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan will be participating.

The 50 young leaders attending the conference include high school and college students who recently visited the United States to participate in exchange programs designed to promote democratic principles, community service, tolerance and mutual understanding.

The Indian participants, mostly from New Delhi, Pune and Ahmedabad, are alumni of the “Youth Exchange and Study” (YES) program that annually sends 35-40 high schools kids to live with an American family and attend school in the U.S. for 10 months.  The students from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan had similar U.S. exchange experiences but will be visiting India for the first time.

The opening ceremony for the conference will take place at the American Center, where the participants will share their views on democracy and community service.
