“Amreekan Curry” To Be Served In India: 15 American artists to showcase original work Nov 1-10 in Delhi
November 1, 2006
NEW DELHI – Fifteen American artists are in India to exhibit 45 original prints as part of the exhibition “Amreekan Curry,” a demonstration of how art and printmaking can bridge various cultures and societies
The artists, three faculty and 12 graduate students from the University of Tennessee, bring their diverse artistic perspectives to the exhibition like unique spices blended together in a traditional Indian curry.
Inaugurating the exhibition, Larry Schwartz, U.S. Embassy’s Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs, said: "This is the University of Tennessee’s first exhibition in India, and we are pleased to have them here in partnership with the American Center. This exhibition is very much in line with our aim to promote mutual understanding between Americans and Indians through dialogue, art and the humanities."
The exhibition is a reflection of an environment created by the leading creative art programs in the U.S. Whether it be the humorous works of Heather Corley obsessively using heart forms or Eleanor Dickinson’s unique prints embodying a travel journal, or Shaurya Kumar’s digital alterations of great works of Western Art questioning the experience of the modern world mediated through the computer screen, “Amreekan Curry” highlights just some of the issues being raised in the art world today.
Organized by the Delhi-based Navsar foundation with assistance from the U.S. Embassy, the exhibition will be on display at the India Habitat Centre Palm Court Gallery from November 1-10, 2006. “Amreekan Curry” will then travel to the state of Gujarat where the exhibition will featured at the ABS Laness Gallery in Vadodra from November 18-28, 2006. While in India the University of Tennessee delegation will also conduct lectures and portfolio exchanges with students from The Delhi School of Art and the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Baroda.
