May 4: Indians throwing off the yoke of British rule and African-Americans fighting for equality and dignity in the land of their birth interacted with each other during their parallel “Journeys Toward Freedom.” A photo exhibit appearing at the Periyar Science and Technology Centre, Chennai, from May 4 to June 4 takes viewers through the history of these struggles with an accent on the profound influence Mahatma Gandhi’s method of nonviolence had on Martin Luther King, Jr. and the U.S. civil rights movement. The exhibit in fact commemorates the 50th anniversary of King’s visit to India “as a pilgrim” to learn about Satyagraha from Gandhi’s followers.

If you are unable to go the Periyar Science and Technology Centre, you can view the exhibit here (PDF 2.29MB).
