Passports
A U.S. passport is the primary document citizens use to enter and exit countries and identify themselves as American Citizens. American Citizen Services at the Consulate in Chennai stands ready to assist you in obtaining a new passport. Please be advised that U.S. embassies and consulates overseas no longer issue U.S. passports locally except in emergency cases. Applications are accepted and forwarded to the United States for completion. This process normally takes 7-10 working days. To avoid unnecessary inconveniences, we encourage all U.S. citizens to submit their applications well in advance of any travel plans.
The application process varies by age and situation. Follow the links for specific information.

In order to save time, we strongly recommend that parents complete the application for a Consular Report of Birth, Form DS-2029 and passport application, Form DS-11, before appearing at the U.S. Consulate.
