Carrie Newcomer brings folk music from the American heartland to South India
American lyricist and musician Carrie Newcomer, described as one of the definitive voices of the American heartland, showcased the diversity of American music to audiences in Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram through renditions of her simple and elegant folk lyrics. On the eve of Gandhi Jayanthi, Newcomer’s October 1 program at the Taj Coromandel was the inaugural event of the Chennai Peace Festival. In Thiruvananthapuram, Newcomer took part in the Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations at Abhayagramam, a home for the mentally disabled and the destitute run by poet and social activist Sugathakumari, and conducted a music workshop at Vailoppilli Samskriti Bhavan. An enthusiastic audience at Kanakkunnu Palace on October 3 offered a standing ovation to Newcomer after her Harmony for Humanity Concert dedicated to the memory of Daniel Pearl.
