How to Apply

VISA RENEWALS.  Great news!  Most applicants 80 years or older or under 14, and many applicants renewing existing visas no longer need to be interviewed.  Qualifying individuals can simply submit their applications through the Visa Application Center (VAC) or one of the 11 service centers and skip the step of appearing in person at the Consulate.  Your eligibility for the Interview Waiver Program (IWP) will be determined during the online visa application process when you will be instructed on how to proceed. Details of the IWP eligibility criteria are located at: http://www.ustraveldocs.com/in/in-niv-visarenew.asp. (Please note that visa officers may still call IWP-eligible applicants in for interview at their discretion.)

INTERVIEW APPOINTMENTS. Make your appointment through the  www.ustraveldocs.com/in website or by phone by calling the call center. Those not eligible for the interview waiver will be instructed to create a user account and assisted in making TWO appointments; one for finger-printing and photo at a Visa Application Center (VAC) and another for a visa interview at the Embassy or Consulate.

Carry with you to the interview:

  • Your valid passport and previously issued passports
  • The DS-160 confirmation page with barcode
  • VFS appointment letter
  • H, L, and other petition-based visa applicants may bring copies of the I-797, I-129 and other petition-related documents
  • F, M students must bring the SEVIS receipt and I-20.
  • J exchange visitors must bring the SEVIS receipt and DS-2019.

Due to security concerns and space limitations, U.S. consular sections do not permit interested parties such as friends, relatives, attorneys or business contacts to attend the visa interview with the applicant.

If an interested party wishes to provide information to a specific consular section concerning a particular visa applicant, they are encouraged to supply this information directly to the applicant. The applicant can then bring this information to the visa interview.

Delivery or Pick Up

Issued visas can be picked up at no extra charge at one of 33 document pick-up locations across India. Delivery can take up to seven business days but is normally much faster.
