Security Message for U.S. citizens:
Demonstrations Surrounding Verdict in Chief Minister Case

September 27, 2014

U.S. citizens in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are advised of the possibility of spontaneous and planned demonstrations after the verdict in the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s court case.  The U.S. Consulate advises individuals to exercise extreme caution and pay attention to media reports.

Indian media currently reports some gatherings in parts of Chennai city, and low-scale violence in other parts of Tamil Nadu.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn violent.  Please avoid areas where demonstrations are occurring and exercise caution if within the vicinity of any large gatherings.  Please stay current with media coverage of local events, be aware of your surroundings, and practice personal security awareness at all times.

U.S. citizens traveling and residing abroad should enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  U.S. citizens without Internet access may enroll directly at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate at their destination.  By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to contact them in case of emergency.
