Karl Malden Remembered

U.S. Consulate General, Chennai is partnering with the Madras Film Society and the indo-Cine Appreciation Foundation to celebrate and remember Karl Malden, one of America’s most respected actors. On July 24, the classic film Patton will kick off the series. This film tells the story of the infamous WWII commander who led the American victory against Nazi Germany. The screenings will take place at 6:30 p.m., on Friday July 24, August 28 and September 25 at the South India Film Chamber Auditorium, Anna Salai – Chennai – 600 006. 

Entry is Free; seating is on a “First Come First Served Basis”.


July 24, 2009: 6:30 p.m.

Patton

(1970; Color; 170 minutes.)

Patton tells the tale of General George S. Patton, famous tank commander of World War II. The film begins with Patton's career in North Africa and progresses through the invasion of Germany and the fall of the Third Reich. Side plots also speak of Patton's numerous faults such as his temper and habit towards insubordination. Faults which would, eventually, lead to his being relieved as Occupation Commander of Germany. On the Waterfront  

(1954; B/W; 108 minutes.)

Terry Malloy dreams about being a prize fighter, while tending his pigeons and running errands at the docks for Johnny Friendly, the corrupt boss of the dockers union. Terry witnesses a murder by two of Johnny's thugs, and later meets the dead man's sister and feels responsible for his death. She introduces him to Father Barry, who tries to force him to provide information for the courts that will smash the dock racketeers. (Source: www.imdb.com)

A Streetcar Named Desire

Blanche is in real need of a protector at this stage in her life when circumstances lead her into paying a visit to her younger sister Stella in New Orleans. She doesn't understand how Stella, who is expecting her first child, could have picked a husband so lacking in refinement. Stanley Kowalski's buddies come over to the house to play cards and one of them, Mitch, finds Blanche attractive until Stanley tells him about what kind of a woman Blanche really is. What will happen when Stella goes to the hospital to have her baby and just Blanche and her brother-in-law are in the house? (Source: www.imdb.com)
