The American Library

General Information

Through the American Library, the Office of Public Affairs seeks to further the understanding of America and its democratic institutions.

The American Library in Chennai provides the latest and most accurate information about the U.S. government and its policies, American values, history, culture and character. The holdings comprise more than 14,000 volumes, subscriptions to 137 periodicals, four American newspapers, CD-ROM and online databases and over 400 videotapes. The collection is strong in social sciences, government and politics, economics and international relations, American history and literature, and U.S. management practices.

The American Library provides orientation programs for effective use of the materials. In addition to the assistance offered by reference staff, American Library members have access to two personal computers and two research carrels. Back issues of the New York Times and some scholarly magazines are available on microfilm. Members may borrow books in person or through post. Members may also request research materials in person or through post, telephone and e-mail.

The American Library collection may be accessed through the computerized Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). Available on the Worldwide Web, OPAC contains the complete holdings of the American Libraries in Chennai, Calcutta, Mumbai and New Delhi. Searches for specific materials may be made by author, title, subject, keyword, publisher, and call number. Every call number indicates the location of the book on the shelf.

Another valuable research tool offered by the American Library is Information USA. Available on CD-ROM at the Center and on the Worldwide Web, Information USA is designed for Indian audiences seeking an authoritative information about official U.S. policies and related commentary on American society, culture, and politics. Extensive hyperlinks to selected sites and full-text documentation make Information USA an unparalleled resource.
