Duende Quartet performs at Unwind Center’s Jazz Revival
March 12: Latin Jazz band Duende Quartet headlined the Unwind Center’s Jazz Revival 2009 from March 12-13. The band came to India through the“American Music Abroad” program sponsored by the U.S. Government. Duende exemplifies America’s multicultural diversity, and its music represents a vast repertoire ranging from traditional Cuban songs to modern jazz compositions. The band conducted a workshop for more than 45 young musicians from the Unwind School of Music on March 12, and then offered a free concert at Museum Theater for 450 music lovers the next day. The Duende Quartet seeks to communicate the full range of human emotions and tell a story through their music -- the crowd applause and demand for an encore indicates that they achieved just that. Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the construction of a Widow Rehabilitation Center in Vayaloor, Mahabalipuram by the organization Acts of Mercy. Consul General Andrew Simkin ceremonially received a generous contribution from the Madras Anchorage Round Table-100 on behalf of Acts of Mercy, and heralded the combination of good music and good works performed on stage that night.
