Secretary Clinton’s letter to women Leaders in India

March 24, 2010

Following is the text of a letter from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to women leaders who attended a reception hosted by U.S. Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer today in honor of Women's Month:

Dear Honored Guests:

I am delighted to offer my sincere gratitude and heartfelt congratulations to the leaders and supporters of women's empowerment assembled here today. Your many contributions to the welfare, socio-economic stability, education, and equality of women in India have left an indelible mark. Indeed, women have made profound contributions in every aspect of Indian society and have helped weave the vibrant tapestry of India's rich history. Thanks to all of you here today, women now have even greater opportunities to shape this nation's bright future.

During my last visit to India, in July 2009, I met with several impressive women leaders, some of whom are here this evening. The presence of such extraordinary leadership in India gives me great hope and certainty that we will continue to see remarkable things from the people of India through the examples, creativity, courage, and entrepreneurial spirit present in these women and countless others like them.

As you come together today, you recognize that economic progress and democratic progress depend on women's progress. You recognize that the freedom and empowerment of women helps them to flourish, and that when women flourish, families flourish, whole communities flourish and entire nations flourish. You also recognize that each of us can play an important role in furthering women's empowerment. From those who run the NGOs and work directly with women to educate, empower and defend, to those who support these groups through events like these or instill in their children the powerful understanding of gender equality, we can all play a role.

The work you do every day inspires millions, and represents the incredible impact women can have when we come together and work for a better future for ourselves, our families, and our countries. Thank you, once again, congratulation on your achievements, and please know you have my very best wishes for a wonderful and memorable celebration!

Sincerely yours,

Hillary Rodham Clinton
