“A Giant Leap for Mankind”
Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Man's First Steps on the Moon And NASA’s 50 Years of Accomplishments
Chennai, July 31: The U.S. Consulate General, Chennai and Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre (the Birla Planetarium), will commemorate the 40th year anniversary of mankind’s first steps on the moon from July 31 to August 9 at the Birla Planetarium. Visitors to the Planetarium will have the opportunity to see simulations of past and future space missions through an interactive computer program and experience the film 50 years of Exploration – The Golden Anniversary of NASA with Neil Armstrong which will be continually screened. Visitors will also have the chance to peruse an exhibit on the “U.S. Space Program – New Era of Discovery” which will be on display through August 9th. Consul General Andrew T. Simkin will inaugurate these activities on July 31, 2009 at 4.00 p.m.
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took humanity’s first steps on the moon. Their success paved the way for the Apollo lunar landing missions to follow and set the stage for other countries, including India, to launch their own lunar missions. Last week, President Obama welcomed the Apollo 11 astronauts to the White House to honor their achievement and noted how the mission continues to inspire.
