Stevie Wonder - Signed, Sealed & Delivered
Chennai, June 22: The U.S. Consulate General-Chennai and The Exodus are organizing a concert that will feature a selection of some of the best known and loved songs of American music legend Stevie Wonder. The concert will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the Music Academy at 7:00 p.m.
Some of India’s best known musicians and recording artists including Sunitha Sarathy (vocals), Benny Dayal (vocals), Anu Cheyyur (vocals), Devan (vocals), Keith Peters (bass), Vijji Cheyyur (Keyboard), Jeo George (drums), Joshua Raj (guitar), Allwyn (percussion) and Matthew Littlewood from France (saxophone) will perform in this concert.
Stevie Wonder’s music, spanning almost half a century, has enthralled generations of music lovers all over the world. Born as Stevland Judkins Morris in May 1950 in Saginaw, Michigan, he was blinded shortly after birth. Wonder never let his blindness or his impoverished childhood come in the way of his musical journey to becoming one of the biggest stars of the recording industry with worldwide record sales running into millions.
Stevie Wonder is also an activist who has taken up various issues ranging from gun control, awareness against drunken driving, racism and apartheid in South Africa. He was at the forefront in lobbying with the U.S. Government to declare civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday as an American national holiday. He also conducts benefit concerts for underprivileged children.
Stevie Wonder, who has won numerous accolades including more than 20 Grammy awards, was presented with the 2nd annual Gershwin Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Library of Congress by U.S. President Barack Obama at a special White House ceremony on February 29, 2009. Presenting the award, President Obama confessed that both he and his wife were big fans of his music. Wonder’s song You and I was the wedding song of Barack and Michelle Obama.
The Chennai concert titled “A Tribute to Stevie Wonder - Signed, Sealed & Delivered” on June 27th will not only pay tribute to Stevie Wonder, the music legend, but also his extraordinary work in promoting world peace.
