Addressing members of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce in Coimbatore on Friday, November 11, 2011, U.S. Consul General Jennifer McIntyre amplified Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s vision of the “New Silk Road”. In her first visit to Coimbatore after assuming charge, Ms. McIntyre praised the contributions of IACC for the growth of economic ties between the U.S. and India.

“IACC has made significant contributions to the growth of economic ties between the U.S. and India, and I’m grateful for their support. When Secretary of State Hillary Clinton travelled to Chennai in July, she became the highest-ranking U.S. official to ever visit the city. During her groundbreaking visit, she delivered a speech that called for the creation of a ‘New Silk Road’,” the Consul General said.

She spoke at length about the role of foreign investment and explained how in nineteenth century, foreign investment in railroads and industry helped finance the economic rise of the United States. “Lower barriers on foreign direct investment would help India modernize its infrastructure and create new jobs in both countries. Today, U.S. companies can provide the goods and services needed to upgrade India’s railroads, airports, power plants, and fiber optic cables,” she opined.
