Seeing ART in Action

Consul General Jennifer McIntyre visited the Antiretroviral Therapy Center in Madurai on January 18, 2012.

U.S. Consul General Jennifer McIntyre visited the Antiretroviral Therapy Centre (ART Centre) in Madurai on January 18, 2012. 

While there, she met with the Dean of Madurai Medical College, Dr. A. Edwin Joe, M.D. (FM), B.I., and District Collector, Mr. Sagayam.  Consul General McIntyre had the opportunity to learn about the program, tour the facilities and interact with the staff, including medical officers, counselors, nurses, data managers, and laboratory technicians. 

On World AIDS Day on December 1, 2011, the ART Centre was recognized as a second-line antiretroviral therapy center.  Patients that would have to travel to Chennai for second-line medication can now receive it in Madurai.  The ART Centre is a field site for a project by the Centers for Disease Control, which has offices at the U.S. Consulate General in Chennai.
