David T. Hopper - Consul General
David T. Hopper assumed the position of Consul General in Chennai on August 26, 2005. Before coming to Chennai, Mr. Hopper served as Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Melbourne, Australia from 2002 to 2005. He is a member of the Senior Foreign Service at the rank of Minister-Counselor.
Since joining the Foreign Service in 1975, Mr. Hopper has served at overseas posts in Stuttgart, Bombay (Mumbai), Abu Dhabi, Krakow, Stockholm, Warsaw and Beijing. He also has worked in several Department of State offices in Washington, D.C., including as Managing Director of the Visa Office, 1995-1997. He speaks German, Polish, Swedish, and Chinese.
Mr. Hopper was born in Albany, Georgia in 1952, and he was educated at Georgetown University and Creighton University School of Law. He is married to Susan Woolley Hopper, who is a retired Foreign Service Staff Officer. They have a 22-year-old daughter, Ann, who is a 2005 graduate of the University of Virginia.
