BRAVE NEW VOICES OF CHENNAI: WITNESS (OR BE A PART OF) THE BIRTH OF A NEW GENERATION OF POETS!

U.S. Consulate General-Chennai and Prakriti Foundation in association with Landmark invite you to participate in the BRAVE NEW VOICES OF CHENNAI - a Poetry Slam contest at the Museum Theater on Friday, December 18, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.  All are welcome (no entry passes or tickets required)!

Poetry Slam is the competitive art of performance poetry, putting dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they are saying and how they are saying it.  Every year, poetry slams in the United States witness the emergence of a new generation of poets which has been captured by HBO in their documentary “Brave New Voices.”  (http://www.hbo.com/bravenewvoices/).  This film will be screened as a part of the Chennai International Film Festival on December 17, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. at Woodland Theatre, Royapettah, chennai 600014. Check out the film to see what a poetry slam is all about and then come be a part of Brave New Voices of Chennai!

BRAVE NEW VOICES OF CHENNAI will feature 5 well known poets as well as budding poets from several leading colleges in Chennai including Loyola, MCC, WCC, Stella Maris, Ethiraj, Madras University, and others. The competition will also be open to audience members – anyone can walk up to the mike – including you - to present your original work of poetry. Participants have to follow three simple rules:

  • The poem has to be an original work of the participant
  • Recitation of the poem should not exceed 2 minutes
  • No props, costumes or musical instruments can be used to enhance the poem

Come take the mike and give voice to your words!  Or just come to watch and encourage the birth of a new generation of poets!
